Our Story Begins With a Single Queen

AntVerde was born from a childhood fascination with ants. Our founder, Alex Rivera, caught their first queen ant at age 12 and was instantly hooked. Years later, frustrated by the lack of quality ant keeping supplies, they decided to create the store they wished had existed.

"Every great colony starts with a single queen. Every great business starts with a single passion."

Today, AntVerde serves over 15,000 ant enthusiasts worldwide, offering the most comprehensive selection of formicaria, nutrition, tools, and educational resources. We test every product with our own colonies before it reaches your doorstep.

We are not just a shop — we are a community of myrmecologists, hobbyists, educators, and nature lovers dedicated to making ant keeping accessible, enjoyable, and responsible.

Essential Ant Keeping Knowledge

Learn the fundamentals of creating thriving ant colonies

Getting Started with Ant Keeping

Welcome to the fascinating world of myrmecology! Ant keeping is a rewarding hobby that lets you observe one of nature's most complex societies up close. Here's how to begin:

  • Choose your species wisely — Start with beginner-friendly species like Lasius niger, Camponotus pennsylvanicus, or Messor barbarus.
  • Start with a queen — A colony needs a queen to grow. You can catch one during nuptial flights (usually spring/summer) or purchase from ethical breeders.
  • Begin with a test tube setup — New queens thrive in test tubes with water and cotton. Keep it dark and undisturbed for the first few weeks.
  • Be patient — The founding stage can take weeks to months. Resist the urge to check too frequently.
  • Transition to a formicarium — Once you have 20-30 workers, it's time to move your colony into a proper habitat.
Pro Tip: Join our community forum to connect with experienced keepers who can help you identify species and troubleshoot any issues!

Nutrition & Feeding Your Colony

A balanced diet is crucial for colony health and growth. Ants need both protein and carbohydrates:

  • Protein — Essential for brood (larvae) development. Offer insects (fruit flies, mealworms), protein jelly, egg, or tuna. Feed 2-3 times per week.
  • Carbohydrates — Fuel for adult workers. Provide honey water (1:3 ratio), sugar water, or our Honey Dew Syrup. Keep available continuously.
  • Water — Always maintain a water source. A damp cotton ball or water tower works well.
  • Seeds — For granivorous species like Messor and Pogonomyrmex, seeds are a staple food.
Pro Tip: Remove uneaten food within 24 hours to prevent mold. Our Premium Protein Jelly is formulated to resist mold longer than traditional food sources.

Setting Up the Perfect Habitat

Your formicarium is your colony's home. Getting it right makes all the difference:

  • Humidity — Most species need 50-70% humidity. Use a water tower or moisture gradient to maintain proper levels.
  • Temperature — Most ants thrive between 22-28°C (72-82°F). Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperature swings.
  • Darkness — Nesting areas should be dark. Use red film covers for observation without disturbing the colony.
  • Outworld — Provide an arena where ants can forage, dump waste, and explore outside their nest.
  • Anti-escape — Apply Fluon or baby powder barriers to prevent escapees.
Pro Tip: Our Crystal View Formicarium features built-in humidity control and dark nesting zones — designed specifically for optimal colony comfort.

Popular Species for Beginners

Choosing the right species is the most important decision for a new ant keeper. Here are our top recommendations:

  • Lasius niger (Black Garden Ant) — Hardy, fast-growing, and easy to care for. Perfect first species. Found throughout Europe.
  • Camponotus pennsylvanicus (Black Carpenter Ant) — Large and fascinating to watch. Slower growing but very rewarding. North America.
  • Messor barbarus (Harvester Ant) — Beautiful seed-collecting species with polymorphic workers. Great for observation. Mediterranean region.
  • Tetramorium immigrans (Pavement Ant) — Small but incredibly active. Fast colony growth and interesting behaviors.
  • Pheidole pallidula (Big-Headed Ant) — Features major and minor workers. Fascinating to observe their division of labor.
Pro Tip: Always keep native species where possible. Check local regulations before purchasing exotic ant species. Responsible keeping protects local ecosystems.
